7 sessions from April 7-June 2nd (No Class on Easter or Mother’s Day)
The purpose of this class is to help you learn the foundational truths of Christianity. A buildings foundation is what keeps it from being shaken. If we want an unshakable faith we need to know what core truths to believe and stand on. In this class we will look at many truths that are central to Christianity. If you want to learn the basics and core beliefs of Christianity, we recommend this class for you. This class is for new believers, seekers and believers who have never taken a class like this. If you are interested in membership at our church this is our pre-membership class.
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:10“11 NIV

I was saved by Jesus in April of 2011. It was the perfect time for me to get saved, I had little obligation, I was going to college. All I had when I began my spiritual journey was my Bible, my girlfriend, and Jesus; and for a while that was just fine. I poured myself into the Word and it was the only thing I read and talked about for 2 months straight. But being un-churched has its benefits and disadvantages. The benefits were I had no presuppositions about Christianity. The only view I had was whatever I read in the Bible. Christianity was this fresh new way to look at life that I was never exposed to. The wisdom, instruction, and guidance in the Bible were so bold and contrary to my original way of life; I was a true rebel, and me being a young man in college, that was a good thing; just me and Jesus was my mantra. However, God created his church to guide new believers. And while the honeymoon love affair between me and Jesus was still red hot, I needed to know the essential truths of the faith. These time-tested biblical truths are the criteria and lens that we view the whole Bible through. Without them, we can interpret the Bible in a way that was never intended by God. The Foundations of the Faith can assess & direct what we read in the Bible so that we know we are staying true to the Word.
This is where UBC's Foundations of the Faith class came into my life. It was the summer. I was saved for about 2 months and I came to a crossroads in my life. I was on a community football team and we were practicing Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm. I was really excited, you see and I didn't really grow into myself until I was about 20 years old. There was a possibility I could start in a real game, but our church was starting the Foundations of the Faith class and you can guess what time it was. Yup, Tuesday night at 6:30pm. For about 2 weeks I was weighing which I should commit to. I knew I needed the foundations class to grow in my faith - but I love football - but I love God - but I could actually play¦on defense no less!!! These were the conversations I had. Then one night I was alone in my room and I was flipping through my Bible and that question was still heavily on my mind. Then the Holy Spirit hit me upside the face with a fat knapsack of grace and landed this verse on me:
8 "Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.- 1 Tim. 4:8
I knew what I had to do, I had to give up my childish ambitions and chase after the One who is eternal and holds my future. Football won't save me; it will only distract me from what I really need. I need a rock to stand and lean on when the storms of life come. I needed to know what happened to me that night in April when I wept and cried out for Jesus to save me. Where did that desire come from? Why did I do that? What have I gotten myself into? How should I live? Is this going to be hard? The foundations class answered these and many more questions.
I learned what salvation is and means, and exactly what I am saved from. I learned how to be assured that I am saved and how to conquer those doubts from Satan. We discussed the power of prayer and looked at how prayer is modeled in the Bible. We used the Bible to interpret the Bible; which is a very biblical thing to do! We talked about the nasty word ˜evangelism' and explored the mysteries of the spiritual gifts. I could go on and on but simply put, it was a meeting that was educational, interesting, engaging, and most of all joyful. Who better than brother Chuck to lead us in these sessions? His stories and love for the people of God are well worth the price of the class (which is free by the way). As a man, being able to spend that much time with a man of God was priceless.
To wrap up, my time spent in the foundations class is still paying off dividends, and can be best described in the hymn The Solid Rock:
"My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand¦
